Interdisciplinary Research and Development Programme

New Music Research Institute Amsterdam

Introduction to Research

For:

Students and professionals entering formal research practice, or those seeking a structured framework without prior academic qualifications.

When:

Saturdays, 12:00 CET/CEST (Zoom)

Focus:

Research as practice: formulating precise questions, assembling a corpus of materials or cases, situating projects within historical and conceptual contexts, documenting process, and selecting appropriate methods. Emphasis is placed on developing critical and discursive competence—testing assumptions, refining terminology, and clarifying artistic and methodological stakes.

Aim:

To transform initial interests into viable research questions and structured working plans. Participants develop tools for documentation, reference management, listening, and method selection, building sustainable research habits through weekly feedback and written articulation.

Young Researchers

For:

Students and professionals preparing for advanced research: developing original portfolios, research proposals, clearly defined questions, and doctoral applications.

When:

Saturdays, 14:00 CET/CEST (Zoom)

Focus:

Formulating research propositions ready for assessment and communication. Participants refine scope, method, evidence, and claims through sustained critical dialogue.

Aim:

To deepen projects through iterative peer exchange. The weekly rhythm establishes accountability and continuity, while the long-term cohort becomes a stable international network supporting refinement of method, documentation, and presentation across multiple development stages.

Advanced Research Group

For:

PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and independent artist-researchers with established research portfolios seeking high-level dialogue and sustained peer review.

When:

Saturdays, 16:00 CET/CEST (Zoom)

Focus:

Advanced theoretical development, methodological testing, and critical examination of ongoing research. Sessions prioritise rigorous questioning and the refinement of arguments, frameworks, and modes of presentation.

Aim:

To strengthen both research projects and the intellectual community in which they operate. The group functions as a long-term peer forum supporting methodological clarity, documentation quality, and professional dissemination.
